FAMILY THERAPY

This is a therapeutic meeting that happens between the family of origin,  the recovering person and the therapeutic team.

Most rehab centres put the family meeting at the end of the rehab program.
Free Hearts prefers to put it in the middle of the program to make a good follow-up.

At Free Hearts, we prefer an arranged, programmed meeting in order to insist on the therapeutic talk. We will never mix a visitation with a therapeutic meeting because such meeting can raise emotions with pain.

The most important person in the family meeting is the client himself/herself.  We always monitor the following  five things;
1. Is this meeting exhibiting humility and acceptance of the problems that were caused by the client?
Can a client  use this meeting as a spring board to begin doing things God's way?

2. Is this meeting exhibiting forgiveness and amending? If there's no remorse of asking for forgivenss in such a meeting then the family therapy is redundant and useless.  For everybody pains when there's an addict in the family.

3. Is this family therapy helping the client to begin doing things to others what he/she would like do unto him/her, for this is the golden rule in recovery.

4. Is this meeting helping a client to seek for solutions and not create problems.
When the recovering person begins to seek solutions and not creating problems then you can easily guess that he will handle the environment at home.

5. Usually, in the family therapy, there's a lot of judgementalism to the family,  to the individual and the whole situation.
A good empowered family therapy must not be judgemental and this is always modulated by the counselor in change.

In conclusion,  some rules and regulations must be used in guiding family therapy.
You can read such in the 12 core competences of the addiction profession counselling.
