Whoever intends to admit a lady in a rehab will always ask, "will she be safe?" This is a genuine question because most rehabs are occupied by male ratio of 1:20.
I've been wondering, are women treated privately or there are no women addicts.
The truth must be told that most rehabs in Uganda are not configured to handle women addicts because they come with a full package. They require to hire an extra stuff to monitor them closely especially where there are mixed sexes.
Free Hearts Uganda is not configured to handle females however Free Hearts Mbarara is very set and women are taken care of in all aspects.
Each female has her own toilet and shower, they have separate recreational areas and a special counselor is assigned to look after them.
At Free Hearts Uganda, we admit females at the Kampala branch for a short time and re admit them in Mbarara. What happens in Kampala is the initial detoxification and the rest of of the programs are done in Mbarara at our own expense.
Have you considered the following;
1. Possible infections of UTIs
2. Emotional isolation due to shame and guilt
3. Feelings of anxiety and resentments
4. Openness in communication about female issues for example monthly period experiences, pregnancy
5. Family and religious backgrounds
6. Culture and traditions etc
Conclusion:
Most African families tend to hide a female gender in a home when affected by addiction.
Our cultures do not support female female issues in open rehab centers. However, some rehabs have tried to overcome and Free Hearts is one of them.
But sad to say, the upcoming rehabs are unfair on the female gender because they are money oriented than being therapeutic.
